British Columbia announces new scholarships for East Asian students

On a recent visit to China, B.C. Minister of Education Peter Fassbender announced a new government scholarship for East Asian students coming to study in the province. Starting in 2016, the B.C. Ministry of Education will provide C$150,000 in annual scholarships to a total of 120 students, 40 each from China, South Korea, and Japan. The money will help 20 students from each country attend elementary or secondary schools, and will help another 20 high school students attend post-secondary institutions in B.C. In addition to this initiative, the B.C. Ministry of Education and the Consulate-General of China in Vancouver established another annual scholarship, the British Columbia-China Award for Excellence in Chinese. The Ministry and the Consulate-General will each contribute C$12,500 to award C$500 to fifty Grade 12 students in B.C. for their excellence in the study of Chinese.
