Education in India: projecting improvements despite myriad challenges

India Education News

Privatisation, internationalisation, and digitisation will play key roles in reforming India’s education system over the next decade. Maharashtra state, with over 100,000 schools and 2,000 higher education institutions, is a leader in each of these areas and has fared better than other states in surveys counting growth of enrolment of girls, Muslims, and Dalits, and has also seen a decline in its dropout rate. 60% of students in Maharashtra go to private schools versus 31% nationally, and the state is considering approval of 19 new private universities in addition to the 6 it recently approved. Further, Maharashtra is home to 41 of India’s 107 IB schools and 97 out of the country’s 318 Cambridge International Examination schools.
