‘Fly in, fly out’ scholars fail to take off in China

China Education News

“Fly-in, fly-out” academics are a source of frustration for Chinese students taking UK degrees in their own country, a new report says. A Quality Assurance Agency questioned whether UK staff are spending enough time teaching students on their degree programmes, with office hours mostly made available by Chinese academics. Most students interviewed expressed a desire for “more face-to-face contact with academic staff from the relevant UK university”.

Editor’s note: Previous research projects by Grok found similar issues. A 2012 field research programs investigating joint programs in East China suggested declining acceptance of short term teaching stints by foreign teachers. The lack of communication with Chinese academic staff and students lowered the quality of the joint programs, undermined the relationship between the two institutions, and has been a contributor to the failure of some joint programs in China. This represents a significant business model challenge for joint programs.
