Gaokao shake-up gives students choice

China Education News

Following growing criticism of the Gaokao exam, the Ministry of Education is continuing to roll out new initiatives in its effort to reform China’s national university entrance test. According to Beijing’s education commission, students in central Beijing will be allowed to choose the subjects they wish study alongside their regular compulsory subjects for the first time. The pilot scheme will be launched in nearly 100 primary and secondary schools in Dongcheng District. Students involved in the pilot scheme will have their scores in their elective courses considered in a “comprehensive academic assessment” that will replace the Gaokaoexam as the main evaluation reference, according to a blueprint for education reform in Beijing.
