Grokker profile – Adrian Ting
Regional Manager (Recruitment), Lakehead University (Canada)
How long have you been working at Grok?
Why do you enjoy working in international education?
I like traveling and meeting new people from different backgrounds. Working in International education allows me to speak to a diverse group of people including students, parents and university partners. My job also allows me to travel to different parts of the world, learning about different cultures, and meeting some awesome people along the way.
What were you doing before working at Grok?
I joined Grok in January 2016. Before that, I was living and working in the UK doing a similar job and was responsible for recruitment in Southeast Asia.
What’s the most important reason your institution needs a person on-the-ground in Malaysia?
Malaysia is a hub for international higher education. Having representatives working in Malaysia allows Lakehead University to gain first-hand knowledge of recruitment processes in Southeast Asia. It also provides Lakehead University with many good opportunities to engage with our alumni network and build stronger relationships with them.
What do you think makes your institution truly special?
Lakehead University is a truly Canadian university and we are proud to provide all international students “A Truly Canadian Experience”. Lakehead University has a small international student population and Thunder Bay is famous for its beautiful natural environment, friendly and welcoming Canadian communities. International students can definitely enjoy their university experience and live in a truly Canadian way while they study at Lakehead University.
Why do you enjoy working at Grok?
Grok is not just an office for us to do our daily email and printing documents. Grok is a family with a group of like-minded professionals who work hard to achieve the goals of our client institutions. The support from the Grok family is phenomenal – we learn and share from each other, and support each other to provide solutions to our clients.
Describe yourself in three words.
Three words to describe myself are L.E.D.
Learn – I believe in lifelong, never ending self-improvement and education.
Enthusiastic – I have a passion for education and I believe education can change life.
Dedicated – When I believe in what I do, I give 110%!
When it is time to relax, what do you like to do?
I like to give something back to society whenever I travel to a less developed country. I try my best to donate books, pens and clothing to children in need and teach them basic English and deliver a message outlining the importance of education.
What is something other Grokkers probably don’t know about you?
I am sponsoring two eighteen-year-old boys and one sixteen-year-old girl. I financially aid their education so they complete high school in their home countries of Laos and Cambodia.
What was your favourite subject at high school?
My favorite subject is Math. I like the logical thinking required and there’s also the fact that I’m good at it. If you’re good at something you’ll probably like it.
