Number of Chinese applying to U.S. grad schools drops for third year in a row

China Education News

A recent survey conducted by the U.S.-based Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) said that international graduate applications for 2015’s fall semester increased by 2 percent compared to the previous year, with a total of 676,000 applications received by U.S. institutions that responded to the survey. However, applications from China dropped by 2 percent in 2015, making it the third consecutive year of decline from China.Given that the recent years of decline came after seven consecutive years of double-digit growth, the current trend has raised concerns about Chinese students’ interestin U.S. graduate schools.
[Grok note: We suspect that the continued growth in younger students studying abroad may also be a factor in declining Chinese applications to graduate programs in the USA. Those looking to obtain an overseas education for the status or prestige it may confer in their home country are more likely today to satisfy that desire through undergraduate study than in the past.]
