NZ offers sector better work rights, visa fast-track

Global Education News

Unlimited work rights for PhD and Masters students; relaxed work rules for English language learners and a pilot fast-track visa scheme are among bold changes announced recently by Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce in New Zealand to support the government’s aim to grow its international education sector. Under the changes, students studying full-time will be allowed to work during all their scheduled course breaks (rather than just summer), doctoral and research masters students will be able to work full-time, and English-language students will be allowed to work part-time during their study.

Editor’s note: According to a new research The Economic Impact of International Education 2012/13, China is an essential student source market for New Zealand’s international education sector, by contributing 25% of students and 32% of total onshore spending. The new changes will help New Zealand stay competitive as a study destination on attracting Chinese students. Beyond that, this news item, as well as the University of Cincinnati partnership in Chongqing, both highlight that the providing opportunities for employment and job experience are increasingly important areas of competitive differentiation among both institutions and governments.
