Perspectives from Indonesian students abroad

Southeast Asia Education News

Every year the number of Indonesians sending their children to pursue an education abroad is rising and rising. Two factors contribute to this phenomenon; first is the economic boom experienced by Indonesia in the last decade. With a growth of 5-7% each year, more parents are now financially capable of bearing the cost of an overseas education.
The second factor is the dawning realization in society of education’s irreplaceable importance and value. As Indonesia’s labor market moves from the manual skills-based to the more knowledge-based employment, parents realize that their children will not stand a chance of obtaining a comfortable future without a comprehensive education. Businesses, aware that they will be in global competition with one another for fresh talent, started giving out bonded scholarships to bright pupils in order to ensure talent continuality in the coming years.
To get the perspective of Indonesian students about their study abroad experiences, GIV interviewed six Indonesian students who are currently pursuing their university education in various countries around the world.
