15 bln yuan annually spent on vocational education

China Education News

The Chinese government has spent an annual average of 15 billion yuan ($2.4 billion) on vocational education since 2011. The money has been allocated to improve basic conditions, teacher training and financial aid for students. Vocational schools have become the main suppliers of skilled labor: around 80 million students have graduated from vocational schools since 2006. A large army of technical workers is essential as China moves away from its historical economic niche in low-cost / low-skill manufacturing up the industrial “value chain” to play a more sophisticated and value-added commercial role globally. Currently 29.3 million vocational students attend 13,600 vocational schools and colleges, which is expected to grow to over 38 million by 2020.
