Government to restructure the University Grants Commission (UGC)
As the Modi government seeks to leave its mark on most of the establishments in India, it has now turned its attention to the UGC. The UGC is set to be remodelled and the three-member committee set up to recommend its restructuring has readied a blueprint of the changed structure that givesthe body more teeth.
The new regulatory body for higher education is likely to have permanent members and representation from the states, much like NitiAayog (the old Planning Commission), along with the power to recommend punitive action for the setting up of fake universities.
