Nalanda University reopens after nearly 800 years

India Education News

Nalanda University (NU), which was reduced to ruins by invaders almost 800 years ago, started its first session this month, holding its inaugural class on September 1st. The project was conceptualized by former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam and former Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar in 2006. The first batch of students are called the ‘Nalanda Pioneers’ by the administration.
NU has started with two schools open of the seven schools planned — School of Ecology and Environment Studies and School of Historical Studies. It currently has 15 total students and 11 faculty members, though they are still in the process of accepting students. In addition to professors from foreign nations, there are two international students from Bhutan and Japan.
