The HE challenge ahead for India’s new HRD minister

India Education News

The new Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar cannot be unaware of the challenges facing him. India’s gross enrollment ratio (GER) in higher education is 23.6%, one of the lowest in the world.
If India is to meet its target, 30% GER by 2020, about 40 million students need to be enrolled in the higher education system in 2020. On the face of it, the current number of universities in India does not have the capacity to cope with the demand. There is also a gender imbalance in higher education that has to be corrected. KIM’S NOTE The three articles above give different views on education enrollments in India. One talks about the poor enrollment rates overall, one looks at tertiary enrollment numbers compared to other countries, and the last talks about how the Indian government is progressing compared to their own goals and targets. The good news for the international student market is demand is high and should remain high, if the Indian government stays on track. It’s worth knowing and remembering not all in India have access to education and it’s still a developing country in many areas.
