UK MPs say post-study work policy is ‘damaging to the economy’

Global Education News

MPs in the UK have said the government’s current approach to post-study work for international students is ‘short-sighted’ and ‘damaging to the economy’. According to a report published by an All-Parliamentary Party Group, since the closure of the Tier 1 (post-study work) visa route, the number of international students securing UK visas after graduation has dropped 88%. The report also lays out some negative impacts from the change, like preventing skilled graduates from contributing to the UK job market. In addition, the report includes policy recommendations for the government including allowing non-EU students to remain in the UK for 12 months after graduation and reviewing other visa routes including the Tier 2 route (highly skilled sponsored workers).
“Higher education is one of UK’s leading export success stories, increasing UK’s soft power and helping the UK shape the world of future. While the government’s current approach to post-study work and student migration policy is jeopardizing British’s position in the global race for talent” Sid Richard Bacon, Conservative MP and member of the committee.
