Chinese oppose tuition hikes: survey

China Education News

An online survey published July 24, 2014 showed that 76% of 2,083 respondents oppose college tuition increases and want colleges to reveal their financial condition.
Some provinces have raised standard tuition for public colleges this year after the Ministry of Education lifted a ban on tuition increases in 2013. Authorities have pointed out that college tuition has not increased in five years and many colleges are experiencing financial difficulties. However, many opponents have noted that colleges’ financial difficulties are not necessarily related to an increase in student costs.
To ease the financial situation for colleges, 68% of survey respondents suggested more government spending. The second most popular solution was for colleges to cut spending on receptions, public vehicles, and overseas trips for faculty.
