Elite universities may relocate under flagship plan

China Education News

The concentration of some of China’s top universitiesin Beijing, including Peking University and Tsinghua University, may come to an end in the medium term based on government plans to create a major economic area that will combine Beijing, the nearby city of Tianjin, and surrounding Hebei province.
The transfer of universitiesto zones outside the capital under the Jing-Jin-Ji plan (as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei plan is known) has generated a lot of debate in China even though it is still unclear how many will relocate and when the moves may happen. Some researchers regard the plan as an effective way to shift some population out of the Beijing core while contributing to regional development. Others have voiced concerns about new campuses being located in less popular and less accessible places.
