Ministry releases list of undergraduate majors with poor employment prospects

China Education News

The Ministry of Education released a list of undergraduate programs that had a low employment rate for new graduates from the 2012-2013 academic year. Fifteen majors made the list, including popular programs like marketing, radio and television editing, business economics, and tourism management. The creation of the list follows a 2012 policy directive for universities to reduce recruitment for majors that are featured on the “low employment prospects” list for two consecutive years. In highlighting the speed of development of China’s economy, many students are frustrated that majors that had good job prospects when they began their studies no longer offer many opportunities by the time they graduate.
The full list of the 15 majors with poor employment rates nationwide are: Food Hygiene and Nutrition, Medical Science, Tourism Management, Social Sports Guidance and Management, Marketing, Animation, Intellectual Property, Radio and Television Editor, Performance, Art Design, Broadcasting and Hosting, Musical Performance, E-commerce, Business Economics, and Public Administration.
