Record number of Chinese students to graduate in 2017

China Education News

In 1997, only 800,000 students graduated from university in China. In 2017, a record-smashing 8 million students will graduate from Chinese universities. This is an enormous number of university educated students (the number graduating in the US is just half that). Masterstudies.com

KIM’S NOTE: While there is intrinsic meaning in university participation rates, the real significance of growth in university graduate numbers is the social and economic impact of that growing body of highly skilled professionals – that is, their ability to add commensurately more productivity to the economy and make greater contributions to society. The magnitude of this influence depends on the quality of university education and the extent to which university studies match the needs within the labor market, and on both measures, historically, China has not fared well. However, China’s top tier institutions are making rapid headway and over the last few years the Chinese government has been closing programs at Chinese universities that result in poor post-graduation employment rates. For foreign institutions seeking MOE approved partnerships in China, the match of a specific program to China’s HR development agenda is an important element, both in finding enthusiastic university peers in China, and in securing MOE approvals for joint programs. Attractive programs include: engineering related programs across most fields (Software, Computer Networks, Telecom, Vehicle, Electrical, Civil); Computer Science; Manufacturing and Automation; Finance/ Financial Management; Accounting, International Economics and Trade; English; and Design.
