US official seeks more cooperation on food, drug safety

In a talk delivered to Peking University students on Nov. 17, Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) called for further Sino-U.S. cooperation on food safety, animal feed and medical products. The FDA opened its China office in 2008 and later that year Peking University, in cooperation with the FDA, launched a graduate program in pharmaceutical engineering management aiming to train the future leaders of China’s pharmaceutical industry. The Commissioner expressed her desire to see further cooperation across borders with pharmaceutical regulators and researchers to ensure a safer supply of food and medicine for the populations of the two countries.
